how many amps breaker to operate hot tub?
i just got this hot tub off of craigslist the guy said he thinks its a 40 amp breaker i needed. when i got home i didnt quite trust him (he didnt seem to be the brightest handy man (they had a pool boy that came over weekly to clean and maintain pool/spa...) to my question how many amps gfi breaker do i need its a challenger 220 older unit made(or sold by) coast spas. and how thick of gauge wire would i need the wire that the tub was using he kept and i wasnt sure of the guage but he said it was standard 4 wire hot tub (bare ground white red and black). i opened the circut pannel and noticed 3X20 amp fuses, from my expierence you would match your breaker (60amps) to that? no? im really not sure adn dont want to melt anything, please help me with what you can i would love to get my tub up and going as soon as possible.

This can be a little hard to answer, 40 amp could certainly be right, but generally the best thing to do is check the label on the hot tub controller/spa pack, and even then you may need to examine the wiring diagram to determine the voltage of the pumps and heaters to figure out which applies.
Many replacement spa packs are designed to be "one size fits all", multiple voltages and amperage heaters and pumps, and have additional fusing built into the board to protect the individual loads connected to the controller, if one of these packs were used the original specs may not be relevant.
But generally speaking, most spa packs will say they are listed for 50 amps, and have a maximum heater wattage listed, and maximum pump horsepower, and this is usually more than the components, and if you wire with breaker and outlet designed for 50 amps the on board fusing will provide proper protection.
But to specifically address the 3 fuses you saw on the board, 240v volt loads (in the US and parts of Canada that I have visited) require two fuses,one fuse on each 120v legs for the 240v loads like the heater, and one fuse for 120v components like pumps, lights and blowers. This scenario would indicate 40 amps on one leg, and 20 on the other, and a 40 amp circuit breaker would be the correct size, and would allow you to save a little bit of money on wire size if you used a 40 amp breaker rather than a 50.
I don't know the code requirements for up north, but they can be little tricky for hot tubs, I do recommend having an electrician do the final connections so he can see all the conditions and keep you out of the wrong type of hot water 
.
