why do I need to ground my cable wire?
In Florida, I noticed my cable wire coming form outside is connected to a splitter before going inside the house. Why is the splitter "grounded"... i think it has something to do with lighting striking but i am not sure.
The ground on the cable is called a shield. It does just that, it shields the conductors that carry the signal from other electromagnetic signals like radio and TV signals. The cable is called co-axial. It has a main conductor in the center which is insulated. Around that insulation is a braided conductor, also insulated. Over all of that is the shield, usually aluminum foil. Much thicker than what you have in your kitchen but same stuff otherwise. The shield needs to be grounded to work effectively.
Radio and TV signals ( same thing ) are converted to electricity when they hit the shield and are drained away through the ground. Without that they would reach the internal conductors and become signal to your TV interfering with the desired signal.
