Am I supposed to take off the metal covers on the RAM chips I recently bought?

I just bought two RAM chips to upgrade my laptop. There is a metal covering on each chip that covers the memory module. It does not cover the connector area. Am I supposed to take the metal covers off before installing the chips??

Probably not, that is probably a heat spreader. It is meant to pull the heat off of the chips quicker so they remain cool.
