Westinghouse Breakers?
We have a Westinghouse panel from the early 90s...and of course westinghouse is now out of business...wtf are we supposed to do for breakers? you're only supposed to use the same brand as your panel, and who wants to buy used circuit breakers?
any advice would be greatly appreciated.
i've heard that one brand bought out westinghouse (maybe cutler-hammer?) and makes replacement breakers, but so far i haven't found any online that were under $50...wtf...breakers are supposed to be under $10, and no where have i seen half-size breakers or afci breakers made by them, both of which we really want
i know that some of the breakers from other brands might "stab-in" alright, but i've heard that it's not code to install other brands. anyone know much about this? i may just ask an electrician
I used to work in the electrical distribution business selling panels and breakers and have also installed hundreds of panels and thousands of breakers -- many brands are actually interchangeable as the bus clip configurations are identical. In fact, many of the supposed "competitors" actually made the breakers for each other. Yeah, yeah, I know you are "supposed" to use the same manufacturer but breakers are breakers -- that's pretty much CYA hogwash. If they fit, they'll work.
Take one out and bring it to either a large building center or, better yet, a contractors electrical supply house (where electricians buy their parts and materials -- look in the phone book or on line.) They should be able to match what you need. Many old style breakers are still remanufactured in the aftermarket and there is still old stock in many places. Nothing wrong with used breakers either -- many of the older ones (made in USA) are more sturdy reliable than the more cheaply made imported newer models.
If all else fails and you want to replace a lot of breakers, it might be cheaper to just replace the entire panel. I just bought a GE house panel complete with main breaker and 20 circuit breakers (including a 2-pole 30 and 2-pole 50 for the laundry circuits) and the entire lot was under $125.
