How to hook up a printer to a laptop?
OK, I'm a computer rookie - total. How can I hook up a Hewlett Packard Laserjet 6 printer to my laptop? The printer has a 25 pin plug and the computer only has a 15 pin receptacle and the configuration is very different. I can't find a usb port on the printer.
Thanks very much for helping out a poor computer neophyte!
I know people are saying the printer is ancient, and it is. I'm not sure how old - maybe 10 years. But it works great and I have about 10 of these toner cartridges which cost about $80 each so I would like to use them.
Oh and Will - thanks for your brilliant answer. Obviously if it was in the manual I wouldn't be asking you jerk!
Hi Nancy,
It's a 6P and I'm using Windows XP on the laptop. Thanks!
And it's a Dell Inspiron E1505
Steve: On the off-chance it would make a difference in the answer, could you please differentiate your printer from the following models listed as HP LaserJet 6 Series:
LaserJet 6L
LaserJet 6L Pro
LaserJet 6L SE
LaserJet 6L XI
LaserJet 6L MP
In addition, please specify the exact make and model of your laptop and which OS you are using. (XP? Vista? ???)

Thanks for the additional information. The short answer is yes, you absolutely can use the LaserJet 6P with your Dell Inspiron E1505. First of course, you'll need a parallel printer adapter cable. You will find 7 very good cables listed here at Tiger Direct: [http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=471].
More $ is not necessarily better; the 'Cables Unlimited' model for $14.99 is quite good. Just be sure you order a cable with the correct number of pins for a perfect match.
A few points to keep in mind:
1. If you have the HP LJ 6L software and/or drivers (already) installed in the notebook, UNINSTALL them before doing anything. Then restart the laptop - twice - before beginning the new connection.
2. Allow XP to 'recognize' the new hardware and install native XP drivers. You do not need the HP drivers.
3. You will see a significant improvement in speed due to the USB connection, though not as fast as a pure USB to USB connection.
4. Finally, those "old" LaserJet series 5 and 6 printers are indestructable; let everyone else laugh. I just gave my HP LJ 5P a decent burial right before the holidays. It was a problem-free work horse for more than 10 years!
Good luck, and if you hit any glitches, email me.
