Could a millivolt thermopile control 2 valves seperatly?
Honewell VS820A gas valve which uses a 750 mv powerpile generator. The pilot stays lit, but gas doesn't flow to the burners when system is turned on. Could the thermopile be getting just enough power to keep the pilot valve open, but not enough power to open the main valve? Or does it only have the ability to send out one signal opening them both together?
So, just so I understand correctly...If the thermopile controls them seperatly then I could just buy a new one. But, if it controls them together, then the thermopile is fine and it's the main valve that must be stuck inside and I need to but a whole new box?
The powerpile does control the pilot gas valve (I disconnected the 2 wires and pilot went out)
It is possible that the generator is putting out just enough to operate the pilot valve, but not enough to open the gas valve. And, since generators are relatively inexpensive (compared to gas valves) it is definitely worth trying that first.
Before you do anything else though, check, clean and tighten the electrical connection at the gas valve. The voltage is so low that a dirty connection there can cause the problem.
If you have a millivolt range meter, test it, but, since they cost about as much as the part, it may not be worth it.
Millivolt generators usually last between 7 and 10 years.
