Electrical Contractor Is Talking About Knob And Tube Replacement Pricing
Taking a job to replace a couple of remaining K & T lines in an old house, we sometimes end up rewiring anywhere between 60 to 99 % of the total wiring. Intentionally or not previous owners often hide the knob and tube.
More often than one could imagine previous owners, sellers, handymen, or lousy electricians replace just the pieces/ends with the new wire hiding the rest of the K&T or use other tricks.
These and a number of various deceptive actions create an exceptionally risky fire situation for the new unaware homeowners. Unprotected connection inside the very dusty wall is dangerous and is strictly prohibited by the code.
Illegal splicing or unprotected in wall connections are common when it comes to houses which are more than half a century old. The chance that several previous owners and numerous renovators did everything to code 5 or 70 years ago is slim. Even the fresh replacements are not any different, they often do not comply with the safety and/or electrical codes and can be dangerous to the residents. The problem is that the only way to figure out the condition of the Knob and Tube is to open the drywall. Or just to go ahead and change the wiring completely.
Just a few remaining Knob-n-Tube wires would carry current to the second and third floors that comprise 70 or 80 percent of the entire home. Such deteriorated or abused circuits make the danger of overheating or in-wall ignition even greater. No electrician and no inspector could find that without breaking walls or without electrical tests. The inspector cannot break the wall to have a look. That is why the inspector executes non-destructive assessments only.
As the exact scope of work is very difficult to calculate such estimate doesn't make much sense. Figuring out the percentage of K&T, ungrounded, and not to code wiring could take many hours. It is always better to replace all the dangerous wiring completely applying only minor cuts rather than opening the walls first for the inspection.
That is why an estimate ten percent of the alleged of knob and tube replacement could turn out to be a ninety percent replacement job.
And that could lead to a conflict or a job not properly completed. Another acceptable pricing option is to use services on the hourly rate basis. Assuming you hired an honest contractor this pricing approach should produce the best and fairest ultimate result.

Fixing an electrical wire - heat shrink tubing question?
My Apple factory iPhone charge cord's insulation has torn away about 1/2" on both opposite ends. I am familiar with heat shrink tubing used when a wire is cut or unterminated - the type you slide over the wire, fix the wire then slide back over the area and heat.
Yet what do you use (other than electrical tape) to professionally repair damaged insulation without cliping the ends and re-terminating.
Is there a heat shrink tubing that is like a cuff that can be used?
Thanks.
You can slice the tubes carefully along their length.with a razor. Cut to length needed. Use as a cuff. Roll it with your fingers as it is heated. I do it. Works fine. It sticks and hardens, so the cut is no problem. As a practical matter, black electrical tape works just as well if you stick the overlapping ends together so they form a tag of sorts. That never comes apart.
You can also do two overlapping cuffs with cuts opposite if you want a more solid fix.
